Asking for Directions

When visiting a new city, it's important to know how to ask for directions. These phrases will help you find a museum, eat at a restaurant, or stay in a hotel.

Where is…? – أَيْنَ…؟ (ʾayna…?)

Example: Where is the hotel? – أَيْنَ الفُنْدُق؟ (ʾayna al-funduq?)

How can I get to…? – كَيْفَ أَذْهَبُ إِلَى…؟ (kayfa ʾadhhabu ʾilā…?)

Example: How can I get to the train station? – كَيْفَ أَذْهَبُ إِلَى مَحَطَّة القِطَار؟ (kayfa ʾadhhabu ʾilā maḥaṭṭat al-qiṭār?)

Is it far? – هَلْ هُوَ بَعِيد؟ (hal huwa baʿīd?)

Example: Is the market far? – هَلْ السُّوق بَعِيد؟ (hal al-sūq baʿīd?)

Right/Left – يَمِين/يَسَار (yamīn / yasār)

Example: Turn right. – إِلْتَفِتْ يَمِينًا. (ʾiltafit yamīnan.)

Additional Expressions for Navigation

Straight ahead – عَلَى طُول (ʿalā ṭūl)

Example: Go straight ahead. – إِذْهَب عَلَى طُول. (ʾidhhab ʿalā ṭūl.)

Near – قَرِيب (qarīb)

Example: The restaurant is near. – المَطْعَم قَرِيب. (al-maṭʿam qarīb.)

I’m lost. – أَنَا ضَائِع. (ʾanā ḍāʾiʿ)

Example: I’m lost. Can you help me? – أَنَا ضَائِع. هَلْ يُمْكِنُكَ مُسَاعَدَتِي؟ (ʾanā ḍāʾiʿ. hal yumkinuka musāʿadatī?)

Booking a Hotel in Arabic

Checking into your hotel is one of the first things you need to do when you arrive. Communicating your requirements at the reception can greatly enhance your stay.

I would like to book a room. – أُرِيدُ حَجْزَ غُرْفَة. (ʾurīdu ḥajza ghurfa.)

Example: I would like to book a double room. – أُرِيدُ حَجْزَ غُرْفَة مُزْدَوِجَة. (ʾurīdu ḥajza ghurfa muzdawija.)

How much is the room per night? – كَمْ سِعْر الغُرْفَة فِي اللَّيْلَة؟ (kam siʿr al-ghurfa fī al-layla?)

Example: How much is the room with breakfast included? – كَمْ سِعْر الغُرْفَة مَعَ الفُطُور؟ (kam siʿr al-ghurfa maʿa al-fuṭūr?)

Do you have any vacancies? – هَلْ لَدَيْكُمْ غُرَف شَاغِرَة؟ (hal ladaykum ghuraf shāghira?)

Example: Do you have any vacancies for tonight? – هَلْ لَدَيْكُمْ غُرَف شَاغِرَة لِلَيْلَة؟ (hal ladaykum ghuraf shāghira lilayla?)

I need a room with a view. – أَحْتَاجُ غُرْفَةً بِإِطْلَالَة. (ʾaḥtāju ghurfa biʾiṭlāla.)

Example: I need a room with a sea view. – أَحْتَاجُ غُرْفَةً بِإِطْلَالَة عَلَى البَحْر. (ʾaḥtāju ghurfa biʾiṭlāla ʿalā al-baḥr.)

Additional Expressions for Hotel Stays

Can I see the room first? – هَلْ يُمْكِنُني رُؤْيَة الغُرْفَة أَوَّلًا؟ (hal yumkinunī ruʾyat al-ghurfa ʾawwalān?)

Example: Can I see the room before booking? – هَلْ يُمْكِنُني رُؤْيَة الغُرْفَة قَبْلَ الحَجْز؟ (hal yumkinunī ruʾyat al-ghurfa qabl al-ḥajz?)

I need an extra bed. – أَحْتَاجُ سَرِيرًا إِضَافِيًّا. (ʾaḥtāju sarīran ʾiḍāfiyyan.)

Example: Can you bring an extra bed? – هَلْ يُمْكِنُكَ إِحْضَار سَرِيرٍ إِضَافِيّ؟ (hal yumkinuka ʾiḥḍār sarīr ʾiḍāfī?)

I would like to check out. – أُرِيدُ تَسْجِيلَ الخُرُوج. (ʾurīdu tasjīla al-khurūj.)

Example: I would like to check out now. – أُرِيدُ تَسْجِيلَ الخُرُوج الآن. (ʾurīdu tasjīla al-khurūj al-ʾān.

What do you recommend? – مَاذَا تَنْصَحُنِي؟ (mādhā tanṣaḥunī?)

Example: What do you recommend for dessert? – مَاذَا تَنْصَحُنِي لِلْحَلْوَى؟ (mādhā tanṣaḥunī lil-ḥalwā?)

I am allergic to… – أَنَا لَدَيَّ حَسَاسِيَّةٌ مِن… (ʾanā ladayya ḥasāsiyyatun min…)

Example: I am allergic to nuts. – أَنَا لَدَيَّ حَسَاسِيَّةٌ مِنَ المُكَسَّرَات. (ʾanā ladayya ḥasāsiyyatun mina al-mukassarāt.)

The food was delicious! – كَانَ الطَّعَامُ لَذِيذًا! (kāna al-ṭaʿāmu ladhīdhān!)

Example: The food was very delicious! – كَانَ الطَّعَامُ لَذِيذًا جِدًّا! (kāna al-ṭaʿāmu ladhīdhān jiddān!)

Additional Expressions for Dining

What is today’s special? – مَا هُوَ طَبَقُ اليَوْم؟ (mā huwa ṭabaqu al-yawm?)

Example: What is today’s special dish? – مَا هُوَ طَبَقُ اليَوْم الخَاص؟ (mā huwa ṭabaqu al-yawm al-khāṣṣ?)

I don’t eat meat. – لَا آكُلُ اللَّحْم. (lā ʾākulu al-laḥm.)

Example: Do you have vegetarian dishes? – هَلْ لَدَيْكُمْ أَطْبَاقٌ نَبَاتِيَّة؟ (hal ladaykum ʾaṭbāqun nabātiyya?)

Can I have the bill, please? – هَلْ يُمْكِنُ إِحْضَارُ الفَاتُورَة، مِنْ فَضْلِك؟ (hal yumkinu ʾiḥḍāru al-fātūra, min faḍlik?)

Example: Can I pay the bill now? – هَلْ يُمْكِنُ تَسْدِيدُ الفَاتُورَة الآن؟ (hal yumkinu tasdīdu al-fātūra al-ʾān?)
